Dealing with employees and employee issues is one of the most important, and one of the most difficult, issues for a company or organization.  Decisions and actions can have long-term consequences, and a good working environment benefits everyone.

I’d like to share a few resources and funding opportunities with you to help keep you on track.

Hiring a new employee is a big deal. You are bringing an unknown entity into your business / organization that you have worked hard to establish. You are also making a commitment to provide a paycheque to this person so that they can make a living for themselves and/or their family.  So how do you make a good decision in hiring? First and foremost, follow a process and make sure that you avoid any improper or legally risky moves, especially in regards to any of the prohibited grounds of discrimination. Here is a quick checklist for the basics.

Now that you’ve hired a new employee you want to make sure they are joining your business as smoothly as possible and will become productive as soon as possible. So what should you do when that new employee is about to start and are in their first phases of employment? Here are checklists for three separate stages for a new hire – Pre-Arrival; First Day; First Week; and First Month.

From the very beginning, you want to keep all the relevant information on your employees in a safe but accessible location. That doesn’t necessarily mean it has to be papers in a file folder in the locked cabinet in the corner. It just means that you should have a centralized and organized system for tracking any significant actions regarding an individual’s employment. Here is a checklist of some items to keep in mind.

Funding Opportunities

If you are a company based in PEI, there are funding opportunites to assist you in your growth and sustainability.

Professional Services Assistance

If you are a private-sector business, you or your business’ manager/supervisor may be eligible for Innovation PEI’s Professional Services Assistance Program. The application is simple and funding is available for up to 50% of the cost to engage a professional business consultant to provide management skills training, not to exceed $500. Areas considered under this funding include accounting/finance, Human Resources, marketing, and production. (Each area can be funded as separate projects.) Contact Innovation PEI to determine your eligibility at 902-368-6300 or toll-free 1-800-563-3734, or apply by going to the Professional Service Assistance Program Application Form.

Training and Workshops Funding

For workshops and presentations, other funding may be available to you through Workforce Development Projects through Skills PEI.

Human Resources Planning Assistance

Funding available for up to 50% (maximum amount per business is $1,000) of the cost of hiring outside HRe expertise to:

  • Assess your company’s existing HR policies
  • Develop an HR action plan

The HR Planning Assistance is an excellent resource to put toward reviewing or developing your employee policies handbook.

Human Resources Implementation Assistance

The Human Resources Implementation Assistance is designed to help new, existing and growing PEI business. This will build value in your small or medium sized company through strengthened HR skills. The support offers financial help to gain professional skills that will help in the design, development and fulfillment of your HR plan.

The funds available here are 50% of the cost of engaging outside help for the design, development and implementation of an HR plan focused on the growth and retention of employees, to a maximum level of $5,000 for eligible organizations.
